COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE: PROGRESS AND COMPLETION

For the wall mural and painting the class, we took around 5 visits to complete the painting of the walls, the wall mural, window and door frame, as well as cleaning up of the space. Throughout the whole time that we were doing it, we learned a lot of what is involved in painting a space, using the wall paint, as well as solving issues on painting, like patching up the parts of the walls that were chipped and making sure the colour sticks onto the wall.

For the first part of the project, we have done a proposed design that was to be painted on the wall. The idea for it came from a vote of proposal from the whole class on what the design should be. It was planned that we had wanted it to be playful and yet not too much as to distract it from the learning. The design was initially done by another person, however because of the constraints we have, I decided to simplify the overall design and came up with the following design in order to be completed without much hassle.

Wall mural design. We decided to remove the trees in the end
because it would be hidden by the tables.

Once we have gotten the design ready, it was time for the painting of the class. We had already bought the paint beforehand. Before painting on the mural, we decided that it would be better if we painted the white on the walls first, since it was the base and in order to cover whatever stains that were already on the wall. But before that, I helped with scraping off the double-sided tape and blue tacks from the walls of the class room. Then I helped with painting the walls white.

We left it to dry and then only moved on to the next part, which was painting on the wall mural. We then masked out the outline of the mountain range based on the image that was prepared beforehand. And painted the colours accordingly based on our colour scheme that was voted on. The tricky part for this was making sure the colours did not drip onto the other part of the walls and also to control the colours so they're not painted on the parts where they shouldn't be painted. It took us about 2 trips to fully finish the painting of the wall mural.

Then we moved on to the painting of the window frame. The painting was a little trickier as we had to be more careful in painting it so as to not get it on the glass as well as the wall.

Lastly, once everything was done, we had to clean the floor from the paint, as well as the skirting and cleaning the windows.

Overall, I think it was a fun experience as we managed to contribute to the society, and to help those not as privileged as we are. I think that this experience really helped me realised on the importance in giving back to the people.

COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE: PROPOSAL PRESENTATION

For this week, we had to prepare a PowerPoint presentation of proposals for the colour scheme and wall mural that we intend to do for the module. We have met up previously and discussed on the type and design of the murals as well as the colour scheme in order to prepare for the presentation.

Then we presented our ideas to the class and got votes on the proposal of design and colour scheme that was agreed by majority of the class. The final proposal for the mural is a scenic view of a mountain range. And the choice of colour scheme chosen was a neutral brown tone with gold accent.

COMMUNITY SERVICE INITIATIVE: FIRST TRIP VISIT

For the Community Service Initiative our first visit was mainly to get the briefing on what we need to do, as well as to divide ourselves into groups. For the Community Service Initiative class, we are supposed to help out in redecorating the classroom used by the disabled in the PPOC, located in Old Klang Road.

I had joined the group that is in charge or repainting the class room, as well as to paint a wall mural in the class room. We had measured the class room to get an idea on how big the area is, and to have an estimate on how big our mural should be and how much paint that we would need to have. From there we could plan our next step in designing the mural and purchasing the materials needed.
